OOTN: Baby, I Got the Blues

Last weekend I had the perfect occasion to wear my gorgeous new cobalt blue skirt from Popbasic.
Although it was a really fun night, it was a sad occasion, as it marked the farewell of one of my good friends who is leaving us for Europe indefinitely.

The length of this skirt is perfect on me, hitting just above the ankles. It's sits high on my waist, so I paired it with one of my favourite crops. I really love this combo - the bright blue contrasted with the black and white pattern just work really well together.

I also thought it was the perfect opportunity to wear my new HFB Interwoven clutch. I think the laser-cut pattern on the clutch works really well with the pattern of my shirt. And to tie it all together, I wore my new black flats with gold-bow detailing from River Island.

OOTD: Le Breton

We spent two full days in Canberra - four days if you include the days we travelled there and back. I'm a notorious over-packer, so I really tried to consolidate my sartorial options for the trip. A pair of shorts, some jeans, a singlet and a long sleeve shirt. Add to that the t-shirt and leggings I travelled in, and that's a pretty fair mix of clothing for warm and cooler weather. So when I learned that we would be going out to lunch, (to a vineyard, no less!) I panicked - I did not bring appropriate clothing for this kind of a trip. It would have been nice if J had mentioned it to me before we left that we would be going someplace fancy....men.

OOTD: Exam Wear

After four years of exams, I've finally learnt my lesson: the Sports Hub at Wollongong Uni is freezing, and it's a lot easier to concentrate if you're over-dressed than under.

I picked up this trench coat a few months ago on sale from Portmans. It's a lot warmer than I expected it to be, and it has quickly become one of my wardrobe staples this winter. 

My tights are from Zara. I love them, but the quality isn't that great. The first pair I bought had a split seam in the inner thigh. I took those back and returned them, which was fine, but the seam then split on the waistband, so I had to stitch them up by hand. Other than that, the material is thick, and they have a high waistband, which is flattering on everyone.

My top is from Sportsgirl, it's a lightweight jumper, and is great for layering.

Outfit of the Day: Is it Even Autumn?

Yesterday I headed out to Newtown to catch up with a good friend of mine who has been in India the past few weeks!

I decided to wear this crop top I picked up on sale at Dotti a few days ago.
I love the cut out at the front, and the black and white print. I also like that it's quite fitted.

I paired it with a black high waisted pleather skirt, and some black stockings to take the 'chill factor' into account. It was such a warm day, I definitely did not even need the stockings and kind of regretted wearing them.

On a completely unrelated note, it was really hard finding adequate lighting without shadows in my backyard to take these photos. Damn you afternoon sunshine!

OOTD: Let's Get Political

Firstly…there is a slightly orange cast to all these photos. I wore this to uni on Monday, when it was ridiculously hot, and the sky was filled with a smokey haze from the bushfires that have engulfed NSW this past week. (That also explains the furrowed brow and general 'pissed off' look on my face...I swear the sun was in my eyes)
I was running late on Monday morning and didn’t put too much any thought into what I would wear. But, I got heaps of compliments so 5.30am Michaela is clearly doing something right.

 

The skirt is one I’ve had in my wardrobe since I was about 15. I have no idea where it’s from, because I ‘borrowed it’ (I swear at the time I had every intention of returning it) from a friend, who had borrowed it from another friend…who you guessed it… borrowed it from a friend. We will forever be tied together through this sisterhood of the travelling tartan skirt. This is probably one of my favourite pieces in my entire wardrobe.

I have been wearing a lot of the gold ID bracelet I got in last month’s Her Fashion Box, and again getting heaps of compliments on it. I love this bracelet…it’s easy, goes with a lot of the jewellery I already own and it looks good!
On the other wrist I stacked up my Thomas Sabo bracelets I got for my birthday. Simple, but it works.

This shirt is one of my favourites. J bought it for me at the Marrickville festival a few years ago. I thought it was apt given the current political climate and comments that have been made in regards to asylum seekers being called 'illegals'. Probably best not to get me started.

Outfit of the Day: Braving the Mid-driff

I bought this top from Dotti as a total impulse buy...so impulse that I didn't even try it on. I saw it, fell in love with it, and somehow it completely slipped my mind to see if it would fit me. 

Luckily, it did. It's a little bit big, but not too noticeably so. 

I bought the skirt from ASOS, and I just love the little triangle it has cut out in the front. 

 

When I asked J what he thought of the outfit, he started to say something, and then hesitated. I managed to convince him to tell me what he was going to say... "it's a bit bowling-pin-ish" he said. 

What goes through boys heads?

I have no idea what else I have in my wardrobe that I can wear this top with...but I love the pattern so, so much and with the heat we've been getting in Spring, I can definitely see it getting lots of wear in Summer!

Back to Uni Fashion Essentials!

Whether you went back to uni this week or last week it's a good excuse to update your wardrobe with some 'back to uni' essentials. ASOS has a massive collection to choose from, and all at a student-friendly budget. I've picked out some bits and pieces that I love and consider essentials. Even on warm days, a cardigan or a light jacket can be absolutely essential. I know at my uni that some lecture halls have air con that's permanently set to "freezing", so a lightweight jacket that I can throw in my bag is much appreciated. I love the waterfall cardigan for a super casual, comfy look. Smarten up the look with a blazer - added studs keep it on trend. I'm also of the very strong belief that every girl should have at least one leather jacket in her wardrobe. 

For the most part, comfort is the first thing I think of when getting dressed for uni. That being said, I appreciate clothes that are comfy and stylish. ASOS have an awesome collection of shorts (I'm totally into vertical stripes at the moment...like my legs needed any more length to them). Printed pants are very on trend at the moment. What I love about the pants above is that they're all pretty unique, so it's really easy to find your own personal style; personally I think that those metallic baroque pants are freakin' awesome.
And of course, I really can't go past an easy, everyday dress for those mornings that I really cbf getting ready. (frugal tip: If, for example, $60 seems a bit much to pay for a dress, then halve the cost in your head. Because technically you're only paying $30 for the top and $30 for the skirt!) Match with some flats or boots, throw on a cardi or jacket and BOOM instant style. Too easy.

I think it's pretty common sense to wear flats to uni. You're walking between the library and lectures and tuts. Most campuses are pretty big and the last thing you want is to be battling blisters or sore feet from heels. Boots are great for winter... I love the cream biker boots with studs. The red and white polka dot flats are instant cute when worn with jeans, and those Maisy loafers add a "grown up" element to any outfit. And some days, you just want to wear sneakers (especially if you have a really long day). ASOS have a heap of different styles so you'll definitely find something that fits with your wardrobe!

OOTN: Night Races!

Last Friday night, J and I went to the night races with my dad and some of my family. The night races are a bit more of a family affair, so it's quite casual and laidback. It was pretty hot on Friday night so this is what I wore:

Outfit of the Day: Relaxed Brunch

This morning I went to lunch with my good friend, Meg.
The weather was really nice; warm, but with a nice breeze to keep you cool.
I decided to wear something relaxed and easy:

I picked up the scarf on sale at Dotti - it's really lightweight, and I think the colours make it perfect for warmer weather. 

Picked up these all-leather sandles for $30 at Freelance Shoes - what a bargain!

I went with light eye-makeup, but wore some natural-looking falsies to give my eyes a bit more of a "pop".
(excuse my messy eye-brows in that photo - they're in desperate need of a wax!)
I wore my hair wavy, which is really not something I do often at all. Even Meg commented on it!

OOTD: Casual Sundays

Bought this lightweight jumper from Supre of all places a few months ago. It's so perfect for wearing on those cooler spring/summer days. Here I'm wearing it over a plain black singlet and with black Lee skinny's. My pole lesson has changed this term from Tuesday nights to Sunday afternoons. 

I need to wear outfits that are easy to change out of for pole - this one's great because I dance in the singlet and just take my jeans off and throw my shorts on. 

Although this is really long at the front and back (which I love because there's ntohing I hate more than having a cold back), the sleeves are quite short on my long arms, so I just roll them up.

It's not super great at blocking out wind, but I love the colour. 

Unfortunately as I was leaving to meet J after, I spilled blue Powerade all over the left arm. 

What a dork.
