Fitness Friday: What's in my Gym Bag

I’m pretty lucky that I only live a 5 minute walk away from my gym. It means I don’t have to make an effort to schedule in time to go, and I don’t have to rely on showering there (really, I don’t think I can express how happy this makes me… gym showers can be so gross). It also means I don’t actually need to pack that much stuff with me in my gym bag. So I literally only carry the essentials with me.

Let’s discuss gym equipment… a towel is an absolute must to bring. There is nothing more disgusting than going to a bench to see that it’s covered in someone else’s sweat. Most gyms (if not all) have disinfectant wipes around that you can use to wipe the benches and machines down with, but it’s still pretty gross to have to clean up after other people. So, bottom line: don’t make other people need to clean up after you and use a damn towel. I bought mine at Rebel Sport. There’s not really much to gym towels… I love mine because it’s microfibre so it soaks up moisture, and it’s got a few different pockets. There’s a “sleeve” at one end, so you slip that over the end of the bench and your towel won’t slip out from under you! The last thing you want to be thinking about when pumping out that last set on the bench press is that your towel is wriggling around under you. This particular one also has a zip pocket, which is handy. I tend to keep a ventolin in there, and my gym pass. That way I don’t forget about them, they follow me around the gym and I don’t have to carry them.

Gloves. This is really a matter of personal preference. On a really hot day I might wear gloves if my hands are sweaty, which alleviates any concern that I might drop the bar. This pair has a leather palm, so that bar is not going anywhere once you pick it up. I have pretty calloused hands from pole, so I find bar work a little easier in that department than other people might. Again, I just picked mine up from Rebel Sport.

Plantronics Bluetooth Headphones. After a towel, these things are my absolute cannot go to the gym without product. Basically, they are bluetooth headphones, that you wear around your neck. It means no cords, no wires to get tangled up in. The best part is that you don’t need to worry about whether your gym clothes have pockets to fit your phone or music player in. If your clothes do have pockets…let’s be real here – it’s a lot more comfortable to not have them weighted down. These have a really long battery life, and they’re really easy to charge. 10/10 definitely recommend.

I have a whole post coming up soon about my Workout Journal. Basically, I use this to keep track of my workout, how I felt after the workout (i.e. whether DOMS was an issue or not) etc etc. I just use a cute ruled notebook because it’s easy. The ring binding means I can shove a pen in the spine, and can bend it backwards and have it laying flat. I may get funny looks from some of the bros at the gym, but I prefer to track my gainz this way.

I really don’t bring many beauty products with me, because I live so close that it’s not really necessary. Over time though, I’ve found these particular products a must have:
Make-Up Wipes: Sometimes I’ll get home from work or uni, get dressed, grab my gym bag and head straight out the door. I completely forget to take my make-up off, and it’s kind of a non-negotiable for me to work out without make-up on. (I just find it really gross) So I’ve gotten into the habit of keeping some wipes stashed for those moments. I've tried so many brands and types of wipes, and I can’t help but keep coming back to Biore. These wipes are textured, so offer a slight manual exfoliation, and I just find they’re really effective at getting most of my make-up off. They remove most of my eye-makeup without smudging it. They never get all my make-up off, but they do get off the vast majority of it.

School Foot Anti-Perspirant*: Feet are not really a topic that people like talking about - which I think it kind of sad, because they carry you around everywhere, and they deserve a little love too. One of the most common foot problems at the gym is stinky feet. Gym shoes can get hot and humid because you're doing a lot of sweating, and this leads to bacteria growing that stink your shoes out. I have found that a combination of foot anti-perspirant, cotton socks and making sure I air my shoes out quickly takes care of the problem. This antiperspirant for your feet is a powder spray - so it's quick drying, and it helps prevent perspiration and consequently, stinky feet. This product has a slight soapy scent to it, but it dissipates quickly. I find I get the best use from it if I spray my feet, wait a couple of minutes, then put my socks and shoes on.

Rexona deodorant: This clinical protection anti-perspirant basically stops you sweating. This is a cream deodorant that you twist up through the holes and it squeezes out like vegemite pushed into a cracker. You're supposed to put this one on at night, sleep with it and then you're good to go in the morning. I just keep it in my gym bag and use it like normal and it still works fine.

What do you keep in your gym bag?

My Handbag Essentials!

I've done a few 'what's in my bag' posts in the past. These days I tend to switch between a backpack for uni and a handbag for work, and a small shoulder bag when I'm just quickly heading out. Today I thought I'd share with you the select items that I always make sure I interchange when swapping my items in and out of bags! I keep everything in a small rose gold mesh pouch I picked up from Mimco

I always carry a little pocket-sized mirror. Useful for applying lipstick and touching up makeup, and useful for checking that you don't have food on your face between your teeth. Pretty sure I picked this one up at Priceline for a couple of buck-a-roos. I always carry some ibuprofen around with me as well, for headaches, cramps, muscle aches and for handing out when my other lady friends have similar problems.

I always carry a hand cream. At the moment it's L'occitane's Rose Aurore. This is a really sweet-smelling light-weight hand cream, and it's perfect for the warmer weather. I normally switch to something a bit heavier during winter. I always carry lipbalm and whatever lipstick I'm wearing that day. I keep a stash of Maybelline's Baby Lips Colour for days I forget to apply lippy, and I've been really liking the Chapstick Everyday Lip Care for general lip nourishment. This contains aloe vera and vitamin E, which is really hydrating.

I was sent this cute packet of Flugs* the other week, and immediately stashed them in my bag. The idea behind them is that when you break the strap on your thongs (the ones you wear on your feet!) you clip the little butterfly insert on, and it fixes them! (There are better instructions on the website here) Genius! And they're Aussie made and owned, and you know how I love supporting Aussie businesses! I'll be honest and admit I haven't tried them out yet, and didn't feel like breaking my thongs to do so, but I don't see how they would not work. But, I thought they're too cute and small, and too good of an idea to not carry with me. I wear thongs a lot, and to think something so cheap can fix my beloved thongs should they break is amazing! You can buy them online here.

I also always carry some perfume with me. I discovered travalo's a couple of years ago, fell in love and since then have amassed a couple. I love them because they're really small, they don't take up much space and they won't shatter and break, spilling perfume throughout my bag.

What are the essential products you carry with you?

Fitness Friday: At Home Exercise Essentials

For the longest time, I have been unable to get to the gym. I either couldn't afford one, or there wasn't one close to me and let's be honest - if it's not within walking distance, I'm not going to go.
So I've amassed quite the arsenal of at-home exercise gear. Today I'm going to share with you my absolute essentials. Just because you can't get to a gym or workout class doesn't mean you can't effectively work those muscles at home.

at home exercise essentials

1. Foam Roller
This is absolutely essential for anyone who works out. It's basically a cylinder made of hard foam (there are different levels of hardness, as well as different sizes out there), and you roll on it to help release knots and sore muscles. I roll on my foam roller every single day because it feels just so damn good.

2. Door Pull Up Bar
J bought one of these on ebay a few years ago, and I love it. It's so easy to quickly bust out a few pull ups and chin ups. The fact that it attaches to a door and is held up with tension means you don't need anything special or a lot of space to have one.

3. Swiss ball
You can do so much with this bouncy ball of goodness. Using a swiss ball requires you to maintain balance, so your core will work pretty hard, even if you're not doing a core-specific exercise on it. For instance, use it to prop your feet up and do push ups. I love using mine to kneel on and try to hold my balance.

4. Massage Ball
This spikey ball of torture is incredible at really getting into those knotted up areas. I love this for releasing tension I hold in my shoulders. This is a lot smaller than the foam roller so it can really concentrate on specific areas. This is one of those "hurts so good" pains. I also really like it for sitting on when you get that intense burn from too many squats.

5. Dumbbells
These are awesome because they take up practically no space. We have two 3.5kg ones and I love them for conditioning exercises for my shoulders and arms. You can do so many different exercises with these, that target almost every part of your body. Get a couple in different weights and you've practically got your own at-home gym.

6. Resistance Band
These come in a couple of different tensions, usually noted by what colour the band is. Basically they're a really tight bit of elastic. I bought one from Rebel that came with a door jam, so I can use it for more exercises than just lunges. I also use it wrapped around my pole or clothes line to do rowing exercises. Again, this little bit of rubber can be used for so many different exercises that target so many different parts of your body.

7. Yoga Block
I bought two yoga blocks for a couple of dollars on ebay - these are literally just blocks of foam so you really don't need to fork out a lot of money for them. If you're new to yoga or stretching it can be really helpful to use a block as an aid. Some purists are really against using aids, but I think there's absolutely nothing wrong with using them if you need it. You're much better off using an aid and getting the full benefit of a pose, than not being able to do the pose properly at all.

8. Skipping Rope
I love my skipping rope for quickly fitting in some cardio for a warm up. If you can't get to the gym to run on the treadmill, and you don't like running in the streets, a skipping rope could be your answer! There's also something fun about revisiting something you used to love as a child. Skipping really requires nothing before you begin so it's a great exercise to do regardless of your current fitness level.

9. Yoga Mat
I love my mat for stretching on. Carpet is slippery, and my house is full of it, so I find the sticky-ness of a yoga mat really helps me hold stretches longer. I don't have room at my place for a designated 'exercise area', so rolling out my yoga mat really helps me to get into the exercise frame of mind as well. Yoga mats are not absolutely essential, so if you feel you're doing fine without one you don't need to rush out and buy one. I just find that it helps increase my level of comfort when stretching.

What's in my bag?

I think that one of the nice things about getting a new bag is re-visiting and re-thinking about what you keep with you every day.

I got this bag for Christmas, and I'm so, so happy with it. It's got lots of little compartments inside, a section for your laptop, and it includes a key chain (which is such an awesome feature!), and it has a nice big pocket on the front. I love the structured look of the bag, and I love that although the straps are quite long there's also the option of using the shoulder strap.

Although the bag is quite big and roomy, I do try to limit what I carry with me on a day to day basis...

The essentials.

I don't leave the house without a water bottle, and I love this one from Bobble. It has an in-built charcoal filter to filter the water as you drink, but I just really love the size. The best thing is you can change the filter, which adds more life to the bottle as you don't get year-old germs on the mouthpiece (gross!)

I've also tried to start being more aware of the money I'm spending, so I carry this little Budget Book with me and write down all my expenses. It seems to be working so far.

I picked up a small notebook to stash in my bag without weighing it down - it's perfect for jotting down blog ideas and thoughts on the go without takign up too much space. It is a paperback, so it will probably eventually get trashed, but it cost me $2 so I'm hardly complaining.

Medical-wise, I carry my enzyme tablets with me, for when I feel like eating something I'm not supposed to - this helps ease my IBS symptoms (TMI?), and I carry my ventolin with me, always.

My Kobo reader I got for Christmas lives in the front pocket of the bag. I still need to buy a case for it, but for the moment I love that it has it's own little home where it will stay safe.

Phone and wallet are standard bag-essentials, I think. Check out this post to see what's in my wallet.

I also carry my day planner with me (check out this post for more about that) to help me keep organised and keep track of what I'm supposed to be doing, and when.
I picked up a point and shoot camera in the boxing day sales, so I keep that in my bag as well. It's nice to be able to have a decent camera with me at all times to take photos of things that inspire me.

I keep all my beauty bits and pieces together in this medium sized, rose-gold Mimco pouch.
I will usually switch bits and pieces in and out of here depending on what I'm wearing on my face that day, but the general contents are as follows;

I usually keep the Australis Fresh and Flawless pressed powder (Review) Burt's Bees Lifeguard's Choice  (Review) and the Nivea Essential Care. I keep some minty breath spray for freshening up between meals on the go.
I usually only keep one 'scented item' with me, but I clearly hadn't cleaned out my pouch when I photographed this. I have two travalo's and fill them with one of my perfumes for touch ups when I'm out. I also have a couple of samples; the ones in the photo are DKNY Be Delicious and Katy Perry Killer Queen.
I also always carry whatever lip product I'm wearing with me. (Again I hadn't cleaned it out), but I have the Bourjois Colour Boost Glossy Lipstick
I also have a mirrored lipstick holder that I got from my Aunt for my 21st, and I love this for storing lippies so they don't break in my bag.

I generally try to keep it minimal, but now that I've written it out, it seems a bit excessive.
What do you carry around with you? How do I measure up compared to you?
